In the questions for McCain and Obama during the Service forum at Columbia University was the question about the military, and the future of our armed services due to the loss of so many military personnel. McCain said he favored the all voluntary military, and preferred the less government approach to volunteering. McCain also said that Columbia University should return the ROTC to their campus, in order for young people to see that option for service. McCain feels we must make our armed services attractive to personnel, so they will stay long term. McCain believes in more volunteer participation in faith based organizations and civilian groups, but some government programs are alright. And he does support some additional volunteer programs that have been successful in the government.

In the same questioning of Obama, it was asked if he favored mandatory service in order to have enough military. Obama said, and I paraphrase, that he would favor mandatory service, for both a civilian side and military side, which would make all young Americans responsible to participate in our country’s conflicts. This is the institution of a draft for both males and females. So that means “All” of America’s children, and future grandchildren would be in the service to America’s protection, and in time of war, because the civilian side will also serve in the war zone without exception. Obama’s approach to volunteers was a bigger control by government to organize people of all ages to a mandatory service. He said a democracy should have an active participation of all ages. I think his mantra was Active Democracy. To read Obama’s actual words please see the “Transcript for 9/11 President Service Forum at Columbia University”. It becomes clear right after his comments on his grandfather’s service in World War II. (clipsandcomment.com)

Obama said “when young people come in we work them like dogs”, which was referring to volunteers in his campaign. So now we have a picture of some of the CHANGE Obama wants to implement. It seems he thinks parents would want their children to participate in this ‘draft’ type environment, and turn off TV’s and video games, or so he said. This is what “Michelle Obama” was referring to early on when she said “he will make sure you participate in his programs.” So what do you think of being drafted into a social program to be active in your own democracy? The difference between Obama and McCain is that McCain believes in less government involvement in volunteering, and Obama’s wants forced participation in volunteer organizations. The biggest difference is that Obama believes in a draft that includes both a civilian and military side, and McCain believes in an all volunteer military, that we currently have. What do you believe is in the best interest of our nation?

This is an interesting question to ponder. Personally, I feel if the country is desperate for military personnel then a draft is one solution to bring in new personnel. However, on the other side of this I feel if Obama were president he will not go out war mongering and put our nation in harms way.
I personally don’t want to go to war, but if it was TRULY a matter of national security then we all have to play our role to defend the lives of our families, our fellow man and what we believe in.

Oh lol, sorry. I forgot to say, I read through your article, and I think you’re right. Barry scares me a bit with all his talk of socialism. All I’m wondering is what country is he going to make our enemy, so that he can have his mandatory army unite under his regime. Heil, the one!

My question is ( and i already know the answer ) has Obama served in the military? If he is elected President, he should be eligible for his own draft, right? This country has done fine since the abolishment of the draft. Why do we need another one? Also, this notion of FORCING someone to volanteer is ridiculous. He can’ not force someone to participate in some idiotic social program.

Senator McCain did state he is happy with the volunteer effort in the states. If he is so happy with it why are our Armed Forces strained? He also mentions that its us, average Americans, that do the work.

Senator Obama suggest that we have civilian services to assist our military. Yes, some will be required to go into hotzones but that would be the set expectation for those interested to CHOOSE that field. No mention of mandatory social programs. He did mention additional incentives for those who go into the high risk programs. Again, its a CHOICE to serve in the military or in another support mechanism.

Bottom line is the greatest military is stretched and there are people that disagree with our military’s involvement in certain conflicts that decreases their desire to serve in that capacity. But they still want to serve in some manner besides posting a flag in the yard. Senator Obama offered an idea in this forum. Senator McCain did not, as he is content with the status quo.

The post above is NOT the CHANGE Senator Obama is suggesting to implement.

You’ve made this statement, “So that means “All” of America’s children, and future grandchildren would be in the service to America’s protection, and in time of war, because the civilian side will also serve in the war zone without exception.”

I think you might have misunderstood what was being said. As a veteran, I know that not even all of the military will serve in the war zone…and you’re implying that civilians will be doing that.

I interpreted Senator’s Obama words to mean that the youth of the USA need to give back to their country by volunteering. I think this will instill ta sense of pride in teens helping their neighbors - instead of just ‘hanging out’ all the time. This does not mean he expects them to go to war. But he does expect them to become civic minded and to accept a challenge better, cleaner, nicer. Be it in nursing homes, hospitals, etc.
