What I’ve Learned From Twitter

I’m a 57 year old retired physician who started getting interested in Twitter about 3 months ago. I’ve spent time trying to learn about this “social media” phenomenon. I think I’ve been fairly successful for an old man in this with over 4500 followers to date.

I recently read the Drudge Report post on the skateboarder Tony Hawke skateboarding in the White House and posting photos on Twitter. I was upset about this–I thought it was an affront to the historical sanctity of the White House.

So I posted on Twitter a post that asked my followers what they thought about a skateboarder being allowed in the White House. I follow quite a few conservative Twitterers and I thought my post would provoke quite a negative response to validate my own response.

What happened was quite a surprise. My first response stated “This is Tony Hawke’s White House too”. A second response said hell yes, that’s right. A third response said that they thought it was great for skateboarding and wouldn’t I like to buy one of their very special skateboards.

I didn’t hear any responses from conservative Twitterers. The silence was deafening. I think I learned from this that republican conservatives have a serious challenge. Many conservatives (older age predominant) are not listening and miss the key challenges to the movement. Many conservatives are completely out of touch with the younger age demographic and the non-white demographic.

I learned a lot by this recent post. And I also gained a new Twitter follower @skateboardshop. I wonder if they sell special skateboard accessories for the geriatric age group?

First of all I as a older Gentlemen agree with the statement ‘ it was an affront to the historical sanctity of the White House’. But this behavior is the “society norm”. Ethics, Morals,,Conservatism is being waved around in our face by a Generation of uneducated youth, chomping on the bones of the constitution while we (the older age predominant) fall behind with the technological political aftertaste. Much work to be done? you bet,,,out of touch? I beg to differ, rather is the youth and non whites out of touch with us the older Generation Conservatives? The youth of today, liberal or conservative( even if they know what that means) do not look at elders as a treasure of knowledge and experience, no we are a obstacle in the way of progressives. Conservatism will find its place in history like other parties have, the damage done? History will tell.
