What’s a good political campaign without some marketing tactics thrown in? Useless!  All political campaigns need to have a well thought out approach to target voters.   Most campaigns will include bumper sticker printing efforts showing the candidate’s name, party and year. Other efforts include distributing flyers door to door and hanging political posters. Flyers have room to explain the stance of the candidate and are often used to spread the word about an upcoming appearance. Political posters will typically feature a candidate’s photo, usually a recognizable head shot, and a simple message which conveys their goals and upcoming agenda.
A campaign needs to speak to a few different factions:

1. Influencers – Voters they know will go out and vote and who can do a good job of persuading others to vote along the same basis.  Influencers are akin to a free sales force to promote the candidate.
2. The Undecided – Registered voters who will be making an appearance at the polls or via mail in ballot who just haven’t narrowed down their selection yet.   If the opponent grabs the attention of the undecided voters first it could be a much more difficult battle to persuade them later.
3. The Non-Committed – People who are registered to vote, but often don’t show up come Election Day. These are valuable votes which can turn an election one way or another.

With a little effort in the marketing arena, a candidate’s campaign can speak to all three of these groups. Votes can be garnered and history can be changed.
